Before it was part of the United States, Texas was ruled first by Spain, then by France, and then by Mexico. Because of this, Texas flew the Spanish flag, the French flag, and finally the Mexican flag. In 1836 the Republic of Texas declared its independence and the new Texas flag featured a yellow star in the middle of a dark blue background. It wasn't until January 1939, that the Texas Congress approved the new Lone Star Flag, which had the same colors as the US flag, but with a different design. Did you know that Texas is the only state in the Union allowed to fly its state flag at the same height as the national flag?
