Skull of a Skeleton With Burning Cigarette | Vincent Van Gogh | Wall Art Print 18X27, 24X36, 30X45
An early work of Van Gogh, Skull of a Skeleton, is a small, undated oil painting that features a skeleton ‘smoking’ a cigarette. Now, part of the Van Gogh Museum’s permanent collection, this work is thought to be a satirical take on old-fashioned academic teachings. Before it was common practice to use models, the academic syllabus included the study of skeletons to develop an understanding of human anatomy. At the time, Van Gogh attended classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, which he said were boring and taught him nothing.
